Every festival brings happiness.

One of my favourite memories is the evening before Varalakshmi Nombu.

The entire house became busy.

Amma would make a checklist.

Paati would patiently guide everyone.

The silver lamps were polished.

The kalasam was cleaned.

Fresh mango leaves were brought home.

The turmeric and kumkum were kept ready.

The flowers were ordered.

The fruits were arranged.

The whole house carried an atmosphere of devotion.

Even as children, we knew something important was about to happen.

The Morning Started Before Sunrise

On the day of Varalakshmi Nombu, nobody slept late.

Before sunrise, the house was already awake.

The entrance was decorated with a beautiful kolam.

The fragrance of jasmine filled every room.

The sound of Suprabhatam and Lakshmi slokas echoed softly.

The lamps were lit.

The kalasam was beautifully decorated as Goddess Lakshmi.

Everything felt peaceful.

Everything felt divine.

One Thing I Always Remember

There is one memory that has never left me.

Before beginning the pooja, Amma would carefully wear her Madisar.

She never hurried.

Every fold was adjusted with care.

Every pleat was placed perfectly.

She would smile and say,

"When we invite Mahalakshmi into our home, we must present ourselves with devotion and respect."

Only later did I understand what she meant.

For her, the Madisar Saree was not just a garment.

It was part of the prayer itself.

It represented:

• Respect for the Goddess.

• Gratitude for family blessings.

• Continuing the traditions of our ancestors.

• Passing culture to the next generation.

The Festival Was More Than the Pooja

After the pooja, relatives and neighbours started arriving.

Married women were invited.

The nombu thread was tied.

Thamboolam was exchanged.

Children eagerly waited for sweets and prasadam.

The house was filled with:

• Bhajans

• Smiles

Every woman looked beautiful in her Madisar.

Each one carried the elegance that only tradition can give.

Life Has Changed

Today, many of us live differently.

Some live in apartments.

Some live abroad.

Some manage work and family together.

Many women have only a few hours to prepare for the festival.

The desire to celebrate Varalakshmi Nombu with the same devotion our mothers and grandmothers had.
